Parents will find practical, biblically-sound guidance on being loving, caring,
and effective parents to their teens. This class is one of the greatest steps
you can take to strengthen home life and raise well-balanced teenagers! Running
the Rapids is a six-lesson study designed to encourage parents to build
healthy relationships with their children, and help parents understand that
they are not alone in the challenges they face. These six sessions will focus
on:
• Knowing the challenges of adolescence and the important impact a parent
can have
• Learning what’s acceptable and unacceptable behavior in a teenager
• Modeling and transferring the values that teenagers will need to build
a positive life
• Developing a close, trusting, encouraging relationship with teenagers
• Helping teens to overcome sexual temptation and to understand the risks
involved
• Using peer pressure to help teens gain a sense of belonging and stability
The time constraints, temptations, and challenges facing families today are intense
and unrelenting. But God’s Word provides parents the truth, encouragement,
and direction they need to build a loving, healthy home. This study will encourage
parents and give them practical tools for guiding teenagers through the turbulent
waters of adolescence.

Research shows that involved parents play a vital role in keeping children away
from the harmful use of drugs, including alcohol. Northbrook is pleased to
present this new program designed by Focus
on the Family. The program will consist of six 90-minute sessions. During
the program parents will:
• Understand and know the signs of drug use and its related harm
• Develop strategies to help their children make informed choices about
drug use
• Find strength and encouragement, knowing that they are not alone
• Benefit from the insight of other parents who share ideas, strategies,
and
stories from their own experiences
The main purpose of How to Drug Proof Your Kids™ (DPYK) is to
inform parents how to communicate more effectively with their children. DPYK helps
parents to develop interpersonal skills with their children that will help them
to increase their confidence. By believing in our kids, even when they do not
believe in themselves, we give them a sense of grace and compassion.
Many parents have the attitude of “not my kid”;
however, surveys indicate that 70% of teens drank alcohol
in the last year. This includes teens who attend church
regularly, as well as those who do not. It is important
for parents to be aware of the fact that their children
will most likely be exposed to drugs at some time, and
this occurs many times around age twelve.
Cost: $20 for the parent manual, 6 Wednesday
evenings at 6:15 P.M., beginning September 6, led by
Charles Clements.
