SHOES FOR ORPHANS – JANUARY COLLECTION
Our semi-annual collection for the children at Orphanage Emmanuel in Honduras and the orphans supported by Life For Children Ministry in Kenya will be conducted throughout January. Your donations of gently used children’s shoes of all sizes, and new underwear and socks continue to be a tremendous blessing to these children. From
our last collection in August, we shipped over 400 pairs of shoes; however, you parents can imagine how quickly 700+ active boys and girls can go through them. Donations may be placed in the handprint bins on the patio throughout the month of January. |

LIFE FOR CHILDREN MINISTRY Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. During the month of November, Northbrook will be partnering with Life For Children Ministry in Kenya to raise funds to establish a planned micro-finance program. This new program, which is a part of the ministry’s longrange plans, will provide small loans to many of the guardians who are caregivers to the 180+ orphans supported by the ministry. With these loans, guardians will be able to raise chickens, or perhaps buy a cow or two. Others may buy sewing machines to make clothes for sale, or tools for a trade. In an area with an average annual income of $300 US dollars and rapidly rising food costs, the guardians will be able to help contribute to their own survival. As they repay loans, others will also be given the same opportunity. Through this progression, along with the possibility of a matching contribution, the funds available for orphan support will enable more orphans to be kept from becoming street kids.
Contributions, made to Northbrook UMC with a notation for “Life For Children Ministry”, may be placed in the offering plates or mailed to the church office. For more information about Life For Children, see their web site at lifeforchildrenministry.org or contact Charles Clements at 404-217-9847. |

STREET GRACE Update: Thanks to Northbrook
and the other 64 Church Partners to Street GRACE,
the 1400 volunteers, and the 58 Community Partners,
great strides have been made in the war against the
Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) in Georgia. The statistics are
truly encouraging: The number of girls being commercially exploited has decreased
from a high monthly average in the first quarter of 2010 of 498 to a monthly
average in the last quarter of 2010 of 278. That means that an average of 220
fewer girls PER MONTH were abused - an almost 50% decrease! Also in 2010,
House Bill 200, targeting criminals engaged in the trafficking of persons for
sexual servitude, passed through the House with a vote of 168 to 1. There is still
much work to be done as Street GRACE will move forward in 2011 with a
national initiative to help stop CSEC entirely. We will remain committed to this
ministry as a church body. There are many volunteer opportunities available other
than our financial giving, in which we as a church have been very generous. Please
contact Joy Henson at joylhenson@yahoo.com or 404-290-8387 if you are interested
in getting more involved. You may also visit the Street GRACE website
at http://www.streetgrace.org to learn more. |

Making the
Most of Your Donations
The missions committee would like to help you
make the most of your donations to the church
and our community. Please follow these guidelines:
THE HANDPRINT BINS on the patio
are reserved for specific monthly donations drives
publicized through the church newsletter and bulletin.
FOOD should be taken directly
to North Fulton Community Charities on Elkins
Rd. except during the months of January and July
when Northbrook fills the pantry of NFCC and utilizes
the handprint bins on the church patio. During
other months, please take your food donations
to NFCC where they have a drive-thru donation
lane.
CLOTHING (gently used) should
also be taken directly to NFCC. These donations
will be given to clients in need of clothing or
sold through their thrift store. For your convenience,
there is a drive-thru donation lane with volunteers
who will assist you.
HOUSEHOLD ITEMS are also accepted
at NFCC. These would include new and gently used
bedding, towels, kitchen items, toys, small working
appliances and other household items. (Note: No
large appliances are accepted.)
Please, please do not leave donations that would
be more appropriate for Goodwill or North Fulton
Community Charities in the “handprint”
bins at church as this creates more work for the
members of the missions committee and may delay
the receipt of your donations to our local agencies. |
